Tyler Fazzari was born with a giant heart. He was 8 years old when Hurricane Sandy tore through Long Island leaving much devastation in it’s path and forced his great grandparents out of their home. Tyler needed to do something. As his 9th Birthday approached, he wanted to find a way to celebrate and give back at the same time. It was then that BirthdayBack was created. A philanthropic movement created to “celebrate by giving”.
Invitations went out, “no presents please”. Instead, make a donation Long Beach’s East Elementary School which was greatly affected by Hurricane Sandy. Tyler raised over $20,000 including a generous donation of a complete SMART Board system from Teq Smart Technologies. Seeing first hand the positive effect of giving, Tyler made a personal commitment to galvanize BirthdayBack and spread the movement.
In 2013, Tyler touched by friends with autism, he “birthdaybacked” to NSSA raising almost $1,000 to purchase needed classroom elements. While visiting the school and it’s special students, he met Congressmen Steve Israel who was inspired by Tyler’s selfless act on his birthday. Shortly thereafter, Congressmen Israel spoke about Tyler and his BirthdayBack movement during his floor speech in the US Congress.
2014 brought Tyler to The Wounded Warrior Project where he invited his entire 5th grade class to bounce for our heroes. Over 100 kids participated and raised over $3,000. WWP named Tyler a Student Ambassador.
His 12th Birthday was all about helping the homeless. After barely being able to walk one block in Times Square with out connecting with a homeless person, Tyler had to help. The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network) was the recipient of over $30,000 worth of products donated by PharmaPacks as well as hundreds of dollars in Metro Cards and monetary donations.
Birthday Back has been profiled on NBC’s The Good Fight with Pat Battle, Fox 5NY with Lisa Evers and in Newsday. Tyler was most recently honored as one of 1010 WINS news “50 Heroes in Honor of their 50th Anniversary”.
